James C. Smith survived crashes, engine fires and ejections from disabled fighters and each time returned to flight duty. He led by example. He served in peace and most effectively in combat. He was a flight commander, a squadron commander, a wing commander and a commander of all Air Guard people and facilities in the state of Texas. His decorations included the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, The Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Service Medal and a multitude of others.
Jim Smith was truly a member of the “greatest generation” and citizen soldier of note.
