This is the story of MAJOR GENERAL (Ret) USAF James Clarence Smith’s life of service to his country, to the United States Air Force, and to the Texas Air National Guard. He flew the blue skies and the grey skies of the United States and the far reaches east and west in a most challenging manner of the time. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force as an aviation cadet early in World War II and flew Air Force airplanes with distinction until retirement as a major general, Commander Texas Air National Guard.

Category:

James C. Smith survived crashes, engine fires and ejections from disabled fighters and each time returned to flight duty. He led by example. He served in peace and most effectively in combat. He was a flight commander, a squadron commander, a wing commander and a commander of all Air Guard people and facilities in the state of Texas. His decorations included the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, The Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Service Medal and a multitude of others.

Jim Smith was truly a member of the “greatest generation” and citizen soldier of note.
